When William Saito quit as a medical doctor immediately after
qualifying, his parents refused to speak to him for two years.

Chapter 5
Lydia announced her intention of walking to Meryton to hear the latest
gossip (流言蜚语) , and all the sisters except Mary agreed to go with
her.
Mr. Collins was to go with them, at the request of Mr. Bennet, who
seemed most anxious to get rid of Mr. Collins and to have some time to
himself.
Mr. Collins **chattered away **endlessly, while his cousins replied
only with polite agreement, till they entered Meryton.
Upon reaching the town, he could no longer hold the attention of the
younger girls.
Their eyes were immediately wandering up and down the street in search
of handsome army officers, and nothing could bring them back.
But the attention of all the ladies was soon caught by a young man of
most gentlemanlike (绅士的) appearance, whom they had never seen
before.
He was walking with another officer named Mr. Denny, an acquaintance of
Lydia’s.
Mr. Denny spoke to them directly, and asked for permission to introduce
his friend Mr. Wickham, who had returned with him from town the day
before.
The introduction was **followed up **on Mr. Wickham’s side by a
happy ease of conversation.
The whole party were still standing and talking together very agreeably,
when the sound of horses drew their attention, and Darcy and Bingley
were seen riding down the street.
On noticing the ladies of the group, the two gentlemen came directly
toward them.
Bingley asked if they knew where Miss Bennet was, since he was on his
way to Longbourn to talk with her.
Mr. Darcy only bowed, and was trying not to look at Elizabeth, when his
attention was suddenly captured (吸引(注意力)) by the sight of the
stranger.

each other.
Both changed color, one turning white, and the other red. Mr. Wickham,
after a few moments, touched his hat—a greeting which Mr. Darcy just
barely returned.
What could be the meaning of it? It was impossible to imagine, and it
was impossible not to want desperately (不顾一切的)to know.

Chapter Five: Pocahontas falls in Love

After many months, Pocahontas met John Rolfe. He was a young tobacco
farmer. John Rolfe was very kind to her. She loved him and he loved her.

They were very happy together.

John Rolfe wanted to marry Pocahontas. But Pocahontas wanted to speak to
her father first.

One day Pocahontas and John Rolfe went to visit Powhatan. The great
chief was pleased to see his daughter.

“Father, this is John Rolfe. I met him in Jamestown. He is a very kind
person. I love him and I’m going to marry him.”

“You are a young woman now, Pocahontas. It is time for you to marry the
man you love.” Powhatan embraced his daughter and John.

“Great chief, I love your daughter and I want to take care of her,” said
John Rolfe.

In April 1614, Pocahontas married John Rolfe in the Anglican Church.

She was the first American Indian to marry a white man. Pocahontas wore
a beautiful white dress. She had flowers in her hair. She and John Rolfe
laughed and danced on this special day. All the people in Jamestown
celebrated the marriage. There were great festivities with music and
dancing. Nantaquas and many other Indians came to celebrate. At the
wedding meal there were white men and Indians. They were all good
friends. They sat around a long table. There were all types of good food
to eat. Pocahontas’ marriage brought peace to the Virginia Colony. The
colony began to grow.

Soon after their marriage, Pocahontas and John went to London.

Pocahontas was surprised to see many new things in England. In London
she wore beautiful English clothes. Everyone wanted to meet her. She met
the most important people of London. She even met King James I! Everyone
loved the Indian princess.

In London Pocahontas met John Smith again after many years! This was a
wonderful surprise. They talked about their adventures in Jamestown.

Pocahontas and John Rolfe had a son. They were very happy. They called
him Thomas. After Thomas’ birth, Pocahontas became very ill. She died in
England in 1617, at the age of 21. This was a tragic event. Many people
mourned her. They remembered the courageous Indian princess.

Young Thomas was educated in Britain by his uncle Henry Rolfe. John
Rolfe was heartbroken. He didn’t want to live in Britain. He returned to
Virginia to grow tobacco. He became an important tobacco farmer. He had
a very big tobacco plantation.

When Thomas Rolfe was an adult, he left Britain. He went to America to
visit his mother’s land. He met his mother’s tribe. He liked the New
World and remained there.

In 1788 the Virginia Colony became a state of the United States. There
are still descendants of Thomas Rolfe, Pocahontas’ son, in Virginia
today.

The End.

A Dutch “positivity trainer” has launched a legal battle to change his
age and boost his dating prospects.

But they’re not complaining about the end result now, says the
44-year-old Japanese American.

In another minute, but without seeming to have noticed what had
happened, Mr. Bingley said goodbye and rode on with his friend.
Mr. Denny and Mr. Wickham walked with the young ladies and Mr. Collins
to the door of Mr. Phillips’s house, and then said their goodbyes.
Mrs. Phillips was always glad to see her nieces.
She told them that some officers were to have dinner with the Phillipses
the next day,
and promised to make her husband visit Mr. Wickham and give him an
invitation also, if the family from Longbourn would come in the
evening.
This was agreed to, and Mrs. Phillips said that they would have a nice
game of cards that evening, and a little bit of hot supper afterward.
As they walked home, Elizabeth told Jane what she had seen between Mr.
Darcy and Mr. Wickham.
Though Jane would have defended either or both men, she could not
explain such behavior any more than her sister could.
Since nobody objected to the young people’s arrangement with their aunt,
Mr. Collins and his five cousins returned on the following day to
Meryton.
As the girls entered the drawing-room, they were excited to hear that
Mr. Wickham had accepted their uncle’s invitation, and was then in the
house.
When Mr. Wickham walked into the room, Elizabeth felt great admiration
for him.
Many of the officers were very gentlemanlike (绅士的) , but Mr. Wickham
was by far the most handsome and charming (迷人的) of them all.
Mr. Wickham was the lucky man toward whom almost every female eye was
turned, and Elizabeth was the lucky woman by whom he finally seated
himself.
His way of making conversation was so agreeable that Elizabeth believed
even the dullest topic might become interesting if she discussed it with
him.
When the tables were set up, Mr. Collins and the others together sat
down to play cards.
Mr. Wickham was therefore free to talk with Elizabeth, and she was very
willing to listen to him.
What she most wanted to hear, though, she could not dare to ask
about—the history of his relationship with Mr. Darcy.
Her curiosity, however, was unexpectedly satisfied, as Mr. Wickham began
the subject himself.
He asked how far Netherfield was from Meryton, and then paused before
asking how long Mr. Darcy had been staying there.
“About a month,” said Elizabeth. To prevent him from changing the
subject, she added, “He has a very large property in Derbyshire, I
understand.”
“Yes,” replied Mr. Wickham, “his estate (财产) there is very
respectable, earning an income of ten thousand pounds per year.
I am perhaps the person most capable of providing information on
this subject, since I have been closely connected with his family since
my birth.”
Elizabeth could not help but look surprised.
“You might be surprised, Miss Bennet, after seeing our cold behavior
toward one another when we met yesterday. Do you know Mr. Darcy quite
well?”
As much as I ever wish to know him,” (了解这么多就够了)cried
Elizabeth very firmly.
“I have spent some time in the same house with him, and I think he is
very disagreeable.”
“I wonder,” said he, “whether he is likely to stay in this area much
longer.”
“I do not know at all. I did not hear anything about his leaving when I
was at Netherfield.
I hope your plans here will not be affected by his being in the
neighborhood.”
“Oh! No—I will not be driven away by Mr. Darcy. If he wishes to avoid
seeing me, he must go.
We are not friendly with one another, but I have no reason to avoid
him.
His father, the late Mr. Darcy, was one of the best men that ever lived,
and the truest friend I ever had.
His son’s behavior to myself has been disgraceful (不光彩的) , but I
believe I could forgive him for anything and everything,
if it could avoid his disappointing the hopes and disgracing (辱没)
the memory of his father.”
Elizabeth found her interest in the subject increase, and she listened
with all of her attention, but the sensitivity of the matter prevented
her from asking anything more.

Chapter Five: Colin

‘I’m Colin, Mr Craven’s son,’ said the boy.

‘Then I must be your cousin,’ Mary said. ‘Don’t you know that I came to
live here?’

‘No,’ he answered. ‘No one told me.’

‘Why?’ asked Mary.

‘Because I am afraid that people will see me. I won’t let people see me
and talk about me.’

‘Why?’ asked Mary. She felt more puzzled with each moment that passed.
‘Because I’m always ill, and I must stay in bed. The servants are not
allowed to speak about me. My father won’t let anyone mention me. He’s
afraid I’ll grow up to have a crooked back. My father hates me because
my mother died when I was born.’

‘Have you always been here?’ asked Mary.

‘Nearly always,’ said Colin. ‘If I go out, people stare at me, and I
hate it.’

‘If you don’t like people to see you,’ Mary said, ‘shall I go away?’

‘Oh, no!’ Colin replied quickly. ‘You must stay and talk to me.’

Mary put her candle down on a table near the bed and sat on a chair.
They talked for a long time. Colin wanted to know all about Mary and
about her life at Misselthwaite. He told her how unhappy and lonely he
was, even though he was given anything that he wanted.

‘Everyone must do as I say,’ Colin said. ‘I will be ill if they don’t.’

‘Do you think you will get well?’ Mary asked.

‘I don’t suppose I will,’ Colin answered. ‘No one believes I will live
until I grow up. Let’s talk about something else. How old are you?’

‘I’m ten, like you,’ Mary said.

‘How do you know I’m ten?’ he asked.

‘Because when you were born, your father locked the garden door and
buried the key. It’s been locked for ten years,’ Mary answered.

‘What garden?’ Colin asked.

‘It was the garden Mr Craven hates,’ said Mary, nervously . ‘He locked
the door. No one knew where he buried the key.’

‘What’s the garden like?’ Colin persisted.

‘It’s been locked for ten years,’ Mary said, carefully. She did not want
him to know that she had found it. But it was too late to be careful.
Colin was very excited at the idea of a hidden garden.

‘I will make them open the door,’ he said.

‘Oh, no!’ cried Mary. ‘Let’s keep it a secret. If they open the door, it
will never be a secret again. If we find the door one day, we can go
inside and no one will know about it except us.’

‘I would like that,’ said Colin. ‘I’ve never had a secret before.’

He was tired from talking, and as he fell asleep, Mary went quietly
away.

He did the training to fulfil his parents’ dream of him becoming a
doctor, and as he jokes, his parents never actually said how long they
wanted him to be a doctor for – just to be one.

Wickham began to speak on more general topics, such as Meryton, the
neighborhood, and the community, and he appeared highly pleased with all
that he had seen.
“I must keep busy and have good company,(丰富的社交)” he added. “I
am not well suited to military life, and should instead have made my
career in the church.
I should have been given a very valuable position in the church, had
it pleased
(省略if的倒装句) the gentleman who was just mentioned.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes—Mr. Darcy’s father was my godfather (教父) , and very fond of me. I
cannot do express how kind he was to me.
He meant to provide me with a stable (稳定的) and well-paying profession
after his death, and thought he had done so.
But when the opportunity arose for a position in the church, it was
given elsewhere.”
“Good heavens!” cried Elizabeth, “but how could that be? How could his
will be disregarded? Why did you not take legal action?”
“The will was not written as clearly as it should have been, so I could
hope for nothing from the law.
The position became available two years ago, exactly when I was the
correct age to take it, and it was given to another man.
Truthfully speaking, I cannot say that I have really done anything to
deserve to lose it.
But the fact is, that we are very different sort of men, and that the
younger Mr. Darcy hates me.”

Emile Ratelband, 69, wants to shift his birthday from March?11, 1949 to
March?11, 1969, comparing the change to identifying as being
transgender.

The reason he left so soon was because he was determined to carry on the
venture he’d begun at just 11-years-old while still in junior high
school.

  • be capable of doing sth.: 有能力做某事
  • **capture one’s attention **:吸引…的注意

现年69岁的埃米尔·拉特尔班德想把自己的生日从1949年3月11日改为1969年3月11日,还将改年龄和改性别相提并论。

He had founded his own start-up company, which eventually focused on
enhanced security for personal computers through technologies such as
fingerprint and iris recognition.

“We live in a time when you can change your name and change your gender.
Why can’t I decide my own age?” he said.

Mr Saito formally incorporated the firm – I/O Software – in 1991 while
he was at university. The company became a leader in biometrics and
information security, and just 14 years later at the age of 33 he sold
it to US giant Microsoft.

While the terms of the deal mean he can’t reveal the price he received,
Mr Saito admits he would have been in a position to retire then if he’d
wanted to.

Ratelband, who makes a living urging people and businesses to be
positive, denies that the age request is a publicity stunt. He claims he
is seeking a personal positive effect.

But unsurprisingly for someone so driven at such a young age, he has
continued to work relentlessly, using his experience to help other
entrepreneurs, particularly in his parents’ home country of Japan.

While born and raised in the US, Mr Saito still believes he “owes the
Japanese”, because it’s his heritage which he credits for his success.
And now he believes he can give something back.

“Now I’m an old man. I have to save my money to give to my kids so that
they can live,” said the father of seven. “But If I have that age again,
I have hope again. I’m new again. The whole future is there for me
again.”

‘Changed my life’

Mr Saito’s parents couldn’t speak English when they emigrated to the US,
settling in Los Angeles in California, just two years before he was born
in 1971.

A local court in the eastern city of Arnhem is expected to rule on the
case within four weeks.

Determined to give their son – the eldest of three – a competitive
advantage to ensure he would thrive in their new country, they focused
on mathematics, bringing over complex textbooks from Japan, and teaching
him things well beyond the expected level for his age.

“That turned into a huge advantage for me,” he says.

However officials were sceptical about the case, believing there was no
legal mechanism allowing a person to change their birth date, local
reports said.

In fact, his maths became so advanced that his teacher ran out of
suitable lessons, suggesting he played with “a thing called a personal
computer” instead.

“I was able to take advantage of this lead and it changed my life,” Mr
Saito says.

One of the judges wanted to know what would become of the 20 years that
Mr Ratelband wanted to erase. “Who were your parents looking after then?
Who was that little boy?” he was quoted as saying.

On this teacher’s advice, his parents took out a home loan to buy him
his very own personal computer – worth about $5,000 (£3,200) in today’s
money – which from their point of view was aimed at helping him become a
doctor.

But some work, organised by the same teacher, changed the direction of
his life permanently. The teacher suggested to a friend – an accountant
at investment bank Merrill Lynch – that Mr Saito, who at the time was
just 10-years-old, could help with writing computer programmes.

Mr Ratelband argues he feels discriminated against because of his age,
and that it was affecting his employment chances and his success rate on
the dating app, Tinder.

“When I finished I received a cheque, and I didn’t expect that.

“That really changed my view about doing something fun, but at the same
time getting paid for it. It was definitely a wake-up moment for me,” he
says.

“When I’m 69, I am limited. If I’m 49, then I can buy a new house, drive
a different car. I can take up more work,” he said.

Despite his precocious start, Mr Saito denies that he was hot-housed,
saying his parents exposed him to lots of different activities, and made
it clear that success was about more than just good grades.

In particular, he says both the schools he went to, and his parents,
emphasised the importance of volunteering.

“When I’m on Tinder and it says I’m 69, I don’t get an answer. When I’m
49, with the face I have, I will be in a luxurious position.”

It’s a lesson he has taken to heart, and since the successful sale of
his first firm, he has worked hard to support other would-be
entrepreneurs.

“我在Tinder上的年龄显示为69岁时,没有人会理我。如果我49岁,以我现在这张脸,我将会非常抢手。”

He confesses one of his favourite pursuits, is judging business plans,
and he travels globally to do this. To date, he calculates he’s judged
some 15,000 people in such competitions.

Mr Ratelband further argued that according to his doctors he has the
body of a 45-year-old, and described himself as a “young god”.

But his main focus is his parents’ home country of Japan.

‘Giving back’

He went on Facebook last year to describe how he had made the decision
one day standing in front of a mirror, not because he feared getting old
but because he wanted to make the most of life for as long as possible.

In 2005, after selling I/O Software, he moved to Japan and founded
venture capital firm and consultancy InTecur.

He also works as a special adviser for the Japanese government,
specialising in cybersecurity.

He also said he would renounce his pension if he switched his birth
date.

But his main drive is to make the Japanese more entrepreneurial.

Ratelband says the Dutch government could benefit if it were to accept
his age demand. He said he’d be happy to forfeit his monthly pension of
around 1,200 euros — a concession he estimates would save nearly 300,000
euros over the 20 years he wants shaved off his age.

The Netherlands’ constitution expressly prohibits employment
discrimination on the basis of age.

Mr Ratelband, a media personality and motivational guru, converted to
Buddhism earlier this year.

He voiced the character Vladimir Trunkov in the Dutch-language version
of the Pixar film?Cars 2.
